the refrain that opens, threads through, and closes the poem

There was a star in life — granted, it was deeply dear.
It set — so be it, it set.
Look at the face of the sky — how many of its stars have fallen.
How many of its loved ones has it lost — and once lost, do they return?
But tell me — for its broken stars, when does the sky ever mourn?

Light a sparkler on Diwali — it shines for a few moments, then fades. Do we cry when it fades? No — and the sky is still full of countless other stars anyway.

The star stands for something dear. The sky loses countless stars without mourning any one of them — the poem opens by using that scale to argue loss is natural, not a reason for endless grief.

There was a flower in life, on which you constantly lavished your devotion.
It dried up — so be it, it dried.
Look at the garden's breast — how many of its buds have dried.
How many of its creepers have wilted — and once wilted, do they bloom again?
But tell me — for its dried flowers, when does the garden ever make a fuss?

Someone gave you a rose you watered every day. A few days later, it wilted. Look at the whole garden — flowers wilt there every day, and new ones bloom every day too.

The flower moves the same argument one step closer to the personal — something nurtured, not just admired from a distance. The garden's daily loss of blossoms, unmourned, reinforces the poem's claim.

There was a cup of wine in life, to which you gave your whole body and mind.
It broke — so be it, it broke.
Look at the tavern's courtyard — how many cups get knocked over.
They fall and mix into the dust — once fallen, do they ever rise again?
But tell me — for its broken cups, when does the tavern ever regret?

You lovingly made a paper boat and floated it in the rain. It soon got soggy and sank. The boat sinking doesn't erase the fun you had making and sailing it.

The cup represents the poem's deepest, most personal loss — "giving body and mind" signals total devotion. The tavern's indifference to broken cups completes the escalation.

Wine-pots are made of soft clay — so of course they break; that's simply what they are.
Cups arrive already carrying a short life — breaking is simply what a short life does.
And yet, inside the tavern, the wine-pots and wine-cups are always still there.
Those truly given over to the intoxication keep drawing out the wine regardless.
Whoever's attachment lies with the pot and cup themselves is still an unripe, amateur drinker.
The one truly seared by the real wine never cries out or wails when the vessel is gone.

If you got ice cream and just worried "I hope it doesn't melt," it melts anyway — and you never tasted it. Same with a sandcastle at the beach — a wave will take it, but we don't cry, we're happy we built something beautiful.

The final stanza ties the three images together: clay cups break by nature, just as a short life meets loss by nature. The sharpest distinction is between someone attached to the vessel and someone who has absorbed what it gave.

The poem returns to the line it opened with — but after four stanzas, that line has become an earned conclusion, not just a statement.

Ten Questions on the Whole Poem

The refrain states that what has passed is now only a matter of talk — it should not be carried forward as grief.

Each image tests the same idea at a different emotional distance — from the impersonal sky to deeply personal devotion.

It functions as evidence — the larger system never mourns its small losses, so neither should a person.

It frames breaking as inherent nature, not accident — a clay object's fragility is built into what it is.

The amateur stays attached to the vessel; the true drinker has absorbed the experience and stays calm when the vessel breaks.

Short, tightly rhymed lines with a returning refrain — a form built for oral recitation and memorability, not silent reading.

A metaphor drawn from Persian-influenced tradition — spiritual intensity and life itself, not literal drinking.

Acceptance — the poem doesn't say things didn't matter; it says mattering and ending can coexist without endless grief.

It turns the line from a simple statement into an earned conclusion, after the journey through all four stanzas.

Madhushala uses the same imagery across a long sequence as a life-journey metaphor; this poem uses a narrower version specifically to process loss.
